The Vincennes Colonial/Contra Dancers Sponsors
The Vincennes Colonial/Contra Dancers are happy to have you as a sponsor for our community and several states Contra Dance on March 5 at Adams Coliseum. Our sponsors so far are United Ins Co, Executive Inn and TLC Internet Services from Bicknell. Efforts are being made to bring more sponsors on board who may be able to help promote in various ways, such as radio, newspapers, musical equipment etc. The gym is contracted, musicians and callers from Bloomington IN are contracted, we’ve set our time and arranged for the food and refreshments. Flyers are being distributed locally thanks to United Ins and the leg work of our dance group. Flyers are also going out to dance clubs in 4 states. An updated flyer we will use right up to the dance will be printed about Jan 20.
We anticipate over 100 dancers and at $6 @ would be about a break even income. We are currently so few in number in our dance club that less than 100 dancers would be a financial loss for us and since our regular dances are free to the public we don’t have any cash reserves. We hope the gate will pay all the bills but there’s no guarantee. So our mission is to bring enough local dancers in and also from the surrounding dance clubs to top the 100 dancer mark. Established dances often draw 300-400 dancers. That would be nice but for our first time we doubt that will happen. We don’t want to ask for financial help and will do everything in our power to make a successful dance.
We would like very much to bring some more sponsors on board who could help us in the media, musical equipment and possibly just recognition of the dance.
You probably have seen us doing dances at the Rendezvous in costume but our regular dances are in casual clothing and are great fun to do. Our regular dance dates at Old Town Players before our March 5 dance are Jan 7&21; Feb 4&11; and March 4, all at 7pm. We urge you to check our website at vincennesdancers.com for more information.
Our March 5 Dance will be in Adams Coliseum. The band will be the Portch Swingers with Cindy Port, Rick Nagy, Bob Port and Juliet Port. The callers will be Bill Baus and possibly Mark Richardson. Doors open at 6:30, food will be available at 7pm with beginner dance help at 7:30 and the dance to start at 8pm till 11pm. All ages, no smoking or alcohol. Janet Davis Memorial Scrabble Tournament
03/14/2008 posted by Ron Ackman
The 7th annual Janet Davis Memorial Scrabble Tournament benefiting heart, kidney or diabetes charities will be held on Sunday April 13 at 2 pm at the Bicknell Bed & Breakfast, 120 W. 3rd in Bicknell. Janet was an avid scrabble player even though she was severely disabled and passed away in 2000 from all 3 disabilities mentioned.
Local business people are always generous in donating something for prizes and contestants make cash donations for entry into the tournament. There are always so many prizes that contestants always get more than one prize. Outside cash donations for the charities are accepted also. Usually between $100 and $200 is raised and this year we are hoping for more. If you like to play scrabble make plans to participate April 13th.
Lots of Good Dancing Going On
The Mardi Gras Celebration in Vincennes Saturday night was a great time for all! The Cajun music was fantastic and J.C. Jones from Nashville TN did a very good job of teaching us some Cajun dance steps that actually were used a lot during the concert.
We were well represented with Ruthie, Charlie, Ann, Diana, Jack and myself. Our friends Ken and Pat Neighbors were crowned King and Queen by virtue of finding the trinket in the piece of cake that Pat received. They also will get a 3 day vacation to the New Orleans Mardi Gras. BTW we had flyers sitting out for our Contra Dance Group and there was interest expressed. Also we do dance to Cajun music some at our dances.
Regular Contra Dancers don’t forget to come and help during the VU Contra Dance Course this Friday Feb 8 and again Feb 15. Room B05 in the P.E. Complex. 7 PM.
Our next regularly scheduled Contra Dance at the Old Town Players Theatre will be on Feb 22 with practice at 6:30 and Contra Dancing from 7 to 9 pm, As always it is free and the rankest of beginners are welcome. Singles, couples or the whole family. For those of you unfamiliar with this type of dancing it is an interactive group dance (you dance with all the other dancers) to easy to follow calls from the caller (usually me). Everybody usually dances and there are no wallflowers and rejections are very rare.
A side note you may be interested in is the FREE BLUEGRASS JAM for the public to be held in VU’s Student Union on 2nd St. this Sunday Feb 10th from 10 am to 5 pm. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and join in. Food and drink are available. Parking in the lot behind the Student Union.
Viv’s Deli Building
404 Fremont which was formerly Viv’s Deli (a great place to eat) here in Bicknell I’m told is planning to reopen as a restaurant and laundromat according to a rumor I heard. If this is true I wish them well as a laundromat is really needed, and with plant workers maybe the restaurant too. J. Pan and L. Rosalez bought the property in October of last year.
